This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
