The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
