The Gruesome Cartoon Film Conclusion That Stays With Fans
Among every mature cartoon movies I have personally viewed, nothing has lingered in my mind as much as the fear-filled ending of the explicitly bloody and highly provocative 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director developed a dark, somber and frequently brutal universe with several minor , desolate glimmers of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it came from an impulse to expand the medium further, the director stated that it was more an attempt to express a global, multicultural message concerning “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That message is expressed through a group of colorful pastel bears , clearly modeled after a well-known series of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a society centered on aggression as well as the war machine, many of these animals are fixated on exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a sacred text that claims the bears they used to be masters of the woodland, before these creatures drove them out.
Others did not entirely bought into the propaganda, , prefer to try out drugs and fornicate in the forest.
In contrast to their cuddly counterparts, these colorful critters show sexual organs , clear libidos.
For one particularly cruel, skeptical animal, Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns transforms into a path to control — and specifically to supremacy above his softer, more compassionate sibling Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , an obvious sociopath , and when terror takes over his squad and takes his teammates one by one, he takes more and more control on his own behalf, via progressively violent, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are experiencing their own horror, as an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“In the early stages, it seems like a humorous movie,” the director stated. “However it evolves into a more dramatic and sad movie. And by the end, it’s a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out resembling among the playful films from an iconic animator, that uncover a naughty glee in allowing cartoon characters swear, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Subsequently it evolves into more akin to a bleaker film from that creator, with increasingly explicit brutality and a palpable link to the real horror of battle.
Ultimately, it becomes an outright Grand Guignol carnage.
The fear that turns the film a perfect Halloween watch kicks in much sooner than one might expect.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted lovers of violence, for lovers of extreme cinema who want to watch a film they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and who can handle a narrative that offers absolutely no punches.
Watch it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
