The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
