The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A recent acronym came to light a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is unique to Gaza, according to health professionals like child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to attend to a child who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that violations are ongoing. Officials disputes these claims, just as it disavows each claim it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that initially championed togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
