The sport of boxing is in a significant decline this season, with few major fights and far less compelling bouts than usual. The prospect of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight contest between Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. The last man standing will with high probability face champion Oleksandr Usyk next season. In opposition, the unsuccessful boxer is expected to regret the certain decline of their earned accolades.

Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only took up boxing when he was 20 years old, had zero amateur background and has perpetually battled skepticism over his skill set. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have stepped up when neither of them was required to take this bout. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was sidelined. Joseph wants to fight anyway.

“Wardley is also in a fantastic position and he merely needed to be patient for his time. He said ‘No.’ He desired to compete – and with Parker because it provides him a shot to skip the line.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not focused on a loss. I respect my opponent and his achievements and how he has prepared for this contest. But I am on a different level and I am going to show it on fight night.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the both of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my professional life and the most important fight ever. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be no different. The divide between where Joe is and my perceived standing has been a recurring narrative throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a many bouts on his resume. In no way is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a significant time and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

The Concluding Analysis

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker should prove too veteran, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the belief that he is next in line for the champion Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a comfortable distance.
