New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities released video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
