Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
