A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.
We are checking images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
