Igor Jesus has now scored 11 goals in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this campaign.

Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' European strike puts Forest in command.
  • Striker nets again with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • The midfielder rounds off a great performance with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side concluded the group stage of the Europa League with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

The hosts had already secured a place in the knockout round play-offs and went into this fixture with a small chance of reaching the top eight, even though they required several results to go their way.

Those results failed to materialize but this assured display will give the supporters confidence that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the upright with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

They broke the deadlock in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and doubled the lead shortly after – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th arrived soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the backline and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off Ferencvaros' aspirations of making a comeback and instead Forest added a fourth when the impressive James McAtee converted a spot-kick after a infringement by the hapless Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off lottery takes place on the final Friday of January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest might face either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It's more than the result, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do well as a unit, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a positive step."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this term with six of his 11 goals coming in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has got a trio of strikes in his last two games and the threat of a challenge for his position in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was watching this match from the stands.

That may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was outstanding against Ferencvaros, delivering two superb goals and generally being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his pace and runs.

The forward was not alone in catching the eye, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Nottingham Forest shirt since signing from the champions last summer, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some renewed optimism as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"All you can ask for is a reaction," continued the manager.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just about displaying your quality.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Igor got another couple and these are positive indicators."
