Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallon Characters
It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a small appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
